How to choose legal help for your particular matter

Consider the issue, verifiable identity and experience, and a clear scope of work before engagement.

The short answer

Start with someone who understands your type of problem, then verify identity, qualifications, actual experience and communication. Translate the search for a good lawyer into questions that can be checked, not promises of winning.

Describe the problem, not only the case label

A business problem could mean contract review, a tax assessment or an unpaid delivery. Summarise what happened, the current stage and the decision now required. This makes the scope discussion more useful.

Verify identity and the actual role

Ask for the identity and qualifications relevant to the service, verify licensing for work requiring it, and clarify the role behind experience claims. Assisting counsel and leading a case are different roles.

Ask what the engagement delivers

Clarify whether the work is document review, advice, drafting, negotiation or a specific procedural step. Ask what is excluded and how updates are provided. This reduces mismatched expectations.

Location matters alongside the work

Searching in Bangkok, Pattaya or Rayong can help identify providers. Ask whether remote review is suitable and which steps require attendance. Serving an area does not necessarily mean maintaining a branch there.

Questions for the first discussion

An immediate prediction is less useful than understanding the missing information and how it will be assessed.

  • Which documents are missing, and why do they matter?
  • Which risks or facts could change the assessment?
  • Who is responsible and how are updates provided?
  • How will scope and costs be agreed before work starts?

Common questions

Must I choose the nearest provider?

Consider the issue, communication and required attendance together.

Is a guaranteed win a better sign?

Look for a reasoned explanation of evidence and risks.

When should scope and costs be discussed?

Before engagement, linked to the work required.
